It may not always have been this way, but these days, most of us would probably agree that takeaway pizza just isn’t complete without its dipping sauces. That goes double for one of the most famous sauces, Domino’s classic Garlic & Herb dip. If you live in the UK where it originated, you know what we’re talking about. That silky, tangy sauce that’s just loose enough to drip, but thick enough to one-dunk drench any pizza or crust. Even the most artisanal and hardcore home pizza makers among us harbor, if not love, then respect for this cult classic dipping sauce.
If you’re someone who likes to order an extra-large serving (look out!) of Garlic & Herb dip with your takeout pizza, if you live in the US where it has never been offered and want in, or have always wondered about making a levelled-up version at home that doesn’t contain the long list of unpronounceable ingredients, this recipe is for you. To create our version, we examined Domino’s ingredient list (rapeseed oil, water, spirit vinegar, pasteurized egg yolk, sugar, garlic, herbs, salt, lactic acid, milk protein, mustard flour, lemon juice and stabilizers), read up on their own recipe disclosure, experimented with online copycat recipes and came up with our own take. Domino’s apparently uses parsley but we like things a little herby, so we also added oregano (optional but encouraged).
Besides the ability to use fresh, homemade ingredients (try making a homemade mayo and using fresh herbs if you really want to level up) and how fast it comes together, what makes this recipe great is how easy it is to adjust to your taste – whether that’s extra creamy or extra pungent. One last note: while it takes just five minutes to prepare, we do recommend leaving it to chill in the fridge for at least an hour to let the flavors marry for a garlicky, herby boost.
Notes: Depending on your preference, you can make a creamier dip by adding more mayonnaise and sour cream, but keep a 1:1 ratio for the ideal flavor. Similarly, if you like your dip extra-garlicky, add another teaspoon or clove to your taste.
